MATTHEWS DEPARTS THE BLUES

Earlier this week Rustington first team manager Pete Matthews decided to hand in his resignation.

Pete decided to leave after a run of poor results left Rustington in the bottom three of the division and he felt that a change might be best for both himself & the club.

RUSTINGTON 3 V 6 WESTFIELD

Rustington's winless run increased to 12 games on Saturday when they lost 6-3 at home to Westfield in Division 2.

Lee Wood put Westfield ahead early on, only for James Bennett to equalise on 20 minutes.

A Duncan Jones hat-trick made it 4-1 to Westfield but Steve Kirkham made it 4-2 in the 35th minute. Blues' Brett Neal was then sent-off for foul and abusive language, before Danny Woodley got Westfield's fifth.

James Butt reduced the arrears on 62 minutes, and after Rustington's Chris Matthews and Steve Kirkham spurned excellent chances,Woodley made it 6-3 late on.

Blues boss Pete Matthews said: "We're not getting the luck, confidence is low and things are bad.

"I didn't think their third goal should have been a penalty and Brett Neal swore at himself in frustration and was sent-off, so it was one of those days.

"But I think we're a couple of players short of being a good side."

RUSTINGTON 1 V 1 CLYMPING

Rustington drew a fiery game 1-1 at home to 10-man Clymping in Division 2.

Clymping went ahead early on when a long Billy Rayner free kick was spilled over the line by Rustington keeper James Askew.

Blues responded well and Kirkham levelled the scores from Ryan Morten's cross on 38 minutes.

Clymping striker Danny Hand was then red-carded for a second bookable offence, after an altercation with the Rustington physio, who was also sent-off.

Kirkham then had a header saved and Chris Green struck the bar for Blues.

Clymping had striker David Gaskin in goal, with regular stopper Michael Oakley ruled out through illness, and their player-manager Dominic Di Paola said: "David was brilliant and didn't do anything wrong.

"Danny Hand's second booking was just ridiculous. But even with 10 men, I thought we were the better side and I'm really pleased with the whole team."

Blues boss Pete Matthews said: "It was very encouraging, we've got players coming back from injury and I'm confident things will turn for us now.

"Chris Kirkham played very well and the defence has been strengthened with Jim Smith coming in."

RUSTINGTON 0 V 1 STORRINGTON

In what proved to be quite an even game Rustington lost at home again for the third time this season already.

Storrington possibly had slightly the better of the first half and the home side had James Askew to thank for a one on one save which meant the two teams went in at half time 0-0. In the second half Rustington upped the tempo and had 3 opportunities to score through Robertshaw, Gibbs and Chris Kirkham bur rather than poor finishing the chances were not converted due to three excellent last ditch challenges from the away defence.

With only 5 mins remaining it looked like the game was heading for a draw until some poor clearances from Rustington defenders and a bit of misfortune presented the Storrington forward with a chance and he reacted quicker than Askew to seal all 3 points for Storrington.

Rustington must now lift themselves for what is already a crucial game against local rivals Clymping this Saturday at Jubilee Avenue.
